- Sub: Guideline for SIGs
-
- Last week (from her sick bed!) Danine asked for some general guidelines about
- running SIGs... I've taken a shot at listing some below, but first lets start
- with a few basic questions:
-
- Q) What is a SIG?
- A) A group of people who share a special interest
-
- Q) Why is SanFAUG sponsoring SIGs?
- A) In keeping with SanFAUG's Mission Statement, we are providing a forum to
- share information about Apple and related products and their use in the
- Corporate environment
-
- Q) What does SanFAUG offer to their SIGs?
- A) In addition to an established SIG meeting date, time & location, SanFAUG
- offer its SIGs:
- o Identity that can be leveraged to obtain vendors, speakers and
- affiliate with SIGs from other UGs
- o Initial organizational structure via you, SanFAUG's Steering Committee
- o Information... via the SC (Steering Committee) and the network of
- members we are establishing
- o Publicity... via general quartely meetings, SanFAUG's membership
- list/distribution methods and eventually through SanFAUG newsletters
- (coming to you in 92!)
-
- Q) What does SanFAUG want/expect from it's SIG's?
- A) To be kept informed about SIG meetings, members, topics, issues, interests
- and input to SanFAUG (SC and general meetings)
-
- So with those question in mind, here's my first draft at some SIG guidelines:
-
- SanFAUG SIG's Start-up Guidelines
-
- (Note: First three items were done at the 12/4/91 general meeting)
-
- 1) Organize interested parties
-
- 2) Establish contact list: Name, Phone, Company, Address, AppleLink ID,
- Company E-Mail ID
-
- 3) Establish Reular meeting date, time & location
-
- 4) Solicite SIG members interest level for meeting topics
- 4A) Discuss SIG members experience (can they give a presentation of
- their experiences)
- 4B) Contact and schedule vendors/speakers
-
- 5) Advertise meeting schedule (to fellow SIG Members and SanFAUG members)
- 5A) Create & distibute flyer
- 5B) Distribute contact list to fellow SIG members
-
- 6) Organize SIG to run on its own! (Your biggest challenge!)
- 6A) Determine need for coordinators and formality of SIG meetings:
- Facilitator: Runs SIG mtg - Solicites input from group - Maintains
- focus - Helps develop action items - Follows-up on
- action items
- Vendor contact: Contacts and coordinates vendor
- requirements/arrangements for SIG presentations
- Publicist: Gathers information (keeps notes) and developes methods to
- publish SIG events
- Membership: Contact point for new members - Maintains membership list
- - works with Publicist to distribute membership list
-
- Initally you may find that you are doing all of the coordinators activities...
- During your first meetings try to get interested parties to take the lead on
- the coordinator activities...To avoid burn out, try to get at least two people
- to share in the coordinator activities... The Facilitator and Vendor contact
- activities could be handled by one person and the Publicist and Membership
- activities could be handled by the second person...To keep things going, you
- might find it easier to be the Facilitator and have several other members take
- on the other coordinators activities...
-
- Don't set yourself up for burn out... Your objective is to set-up the SIG to
- run on its own... If you decide to have an ongoing role, it should be that of a
- consultant... One in which you can leverage your SC knowledge and contacts...
- Develop a position that will allow you to continue to function on the SC...
- One in which you can act as the funnel of information between the SC and the
- SIG ... But eventually, even that task should be handle by another SIG member
- (it gives the member an opportunity to be exposed to SC members and activities)
-
- Another suggestion...Right now your SIG is scheduled to meet once a month...
- you might find it difficult to get the momentum you need to get your SIG off to
- a good start... If it looks like you have the support and can handle bi-monthly
- meetings you might want to try having very informal discussion meetings (no
- vendors or speakers)... You may find that these informal meetings will give
- your Mac users exactly the type of networking they're looking for... And these
- informal meetings can help define the SIGs list of vendors and speakers
-
- This draft should get you off to a start...Over time, the SIG will start to
- take on its own direction...
- I hope these guigelines help... please feel free to add your input... -Bill
